Connecticut Shooting

The big thing being talked about right now is the Connecticut school shooting. This is truly a a sad tragedy. While it may be "too soon" to be talking about the change in the law about guns, it has to be done. There have been one too many incidents like this one. President Obama really showed that he cares about what has happened today, and it should make us feel safer because he has the power to change things. He has promised to take actions to prevent things like this, and hopefully he comes through with it. However, it's sad to think that even if laws get passed, some people will still do things like this, illegally.
No parent wants to send their children to school, thinking that they are safe when they're really not. Yes there have been many other tragic things that have happened; but when you think about elementary school kids being killed, you have no choice but to feel some sort of sad emotion. These children had their whole lives ahead of them. They could have been/done something big for this country. But now we'll never know. I just hope that the President will do as he promised.

Conversations

After reading "Where there's a will, there's a way" I can honestly say that I've never thought about changing government that way. I have to agree with her, if we can change how we talk about politics there's a slight chance that things cant change.
Voting has become some sort of a fad and I felt like some people voted just so they could get a sticker and knew little to nothing about any candidate. If we talked more about the third parties and not just the two big ones, the votes could maybe change! I think that if we really got "back to the root of it" we'd have a better democracy because people would vote more efficiently and wouldn't be worried about what the candidates ate for breakfast or what kind of car they ride in.
It's not just the voters fault either. These politicians make such a big deal about getting reelected that most of them don't spend time doing what they have promised. If they did, they would most likely get reelected again by the same people anyway. Funny how they don't see that.
So yes the system is flawed and we have the ability to change it. However I don't see that happening because we are stuck on worrying about the wrong things. If and when we start changing our conversations, can truly be more efficient for our benefit.

Planned Parenthood

As most of us may know, Romney is planing to take away some of the funding to Planned Parenthood if elected president. Besides providing abortion, Planned Parenthood is a worldwide program that educates men and women about sex and also provide healthcare. I don’t think that Romney should take funding from it because teens should be educated about this and not just by their parents. I say that because sometimes teens do not listen to what their parents have to say and therefore they don’t see the reality that’s out there. With Planned Parenthood, teens are able to understand things from other people’s perspective. They also help women have easy access to contraceptives, for low costs, that help prevent pregnancies. If Romney takes away funding from this, they would have to be a private organization which would mean less access and possibly more teen pregnancies, “Cutting funding for Planned Parenthood will not stop people from having sex, but it will take away an organization that provides sexual health support and services that many women cannot access anywhere else.” (Watson)

The main reason why Romney wants to take the funding away from this is because he doesn’t support abortion. But abortion is only about 3% of what they do according to Sheridan Watson in “Planned Parenthood cannot be cut” and the rest of it basically information and healthcare. Another thing that he touches on is that women have the right to do whatever they want with their body and if that means abortion, then so be it. I don’t think that anyone should have a baby if they’re not ready. If you do it early enough, the “thing” (baby, if you will) does not have a central nervous system developed, therefore it cannot feel and it won’t hurt.
If Romney takes away funding from this organization I think there will be more problems such as STD’s and less informed people. Therefore more pregnancies and even more debt.

The Second Presidential Debate

Those of us who watched the second Presidential debate probably felt like President Obama won by a landslide. At least that's how I felt- and so did John Aravosis according to the article he wrote, Who won the debate? The Ba-Rock Star. He described Romney as being "a liar who doesn't believe in much." and that he has a lot of flip flops. I have to agree with him because I don't like the way Romney handles his debates. Even though he "won" the first debate, I didn't feel like he was being sincere, and that he was just saying things because people wanted to hear it but that he won't actually do what he's promising. I digress. I like how throughout the article, Aravosis states how president Obama won this debate. He included that Romney said Obama did not call the attack of our ambassador and "act of terror" until fourteen days later, but he was quickly shut down by both Obama and Candy Crowley saying that he indeed called it the next day. He states that the conservatives are saying that Obama's comment did not have anything to do with what happened in Libya, I don't think it could have been more obvious with the title "Remarks by the President on the Deaths of U.S. Embassy Staff in Libya”. The article goes on by saying that Romney got called out when Obama said his $5 trillion tax cut isn't adding up and people agreed. Aravosis says that Romney was being pushy throughout most of the debate; people don't like that. I sure don't want a president who promises a working tax plan but the most people see it differently. When asked about how they were different from George Bush, Aravosis states that President Obama did a "Masterful" job and of course I have to agree- because he did. He stated that we are not going to fix anything economically with social policy. Last but not least Avarosis says that Romney got a "3am call" after Obama brings up his 47% comment. I thought this was pretty funny because indeed Romney was figuratively "fumbling for his reading glasses" after that, you could see it in his face. I agree with this article, Obama did have a great night and I hope he keeps it up and proves Ray C. Fair's prediction wrong.

Zing/The debate

Let me start off by saying that I completely agree with what Jed Lewison said on the Daily Kos "Mitt Romney's debate plan: Zing and goad". Romney basically said that if he could get president Obama to say something contradicting, then he will for sure win...and to that I say no way. A good joke is fine and all but it won't make up for the fact that he dissed about all of the Hispanics, which is a good percentage of the voters. Lewison sums it up very well when he says "...there's probably a fair number of people who would cheer the president if he walked across the stage and punched Mitt Romney in the face on behalf of the tens of millions of Americans that Romney so callously dismissed." Besides that big factor, Obama is ahead, not by much though. Hopefully he can keep all of his voters after Wednesdays debate and then some.

Update: my thoughts on Wednesday's debate.
It was the first debate I ever fully watched and I have to say that I thought it was a little interesting. Despite the fact that no one, or should I say Mitt Romney, respected the 2 minute mark, the debate was ok. I am mostly worried about the future of MediCaid because I have an autistic brother that really needs it for all the doctors appointments and medication. They both seem to have a plan for that, though. I noticed that Romney wants to give the states more power and Obama wants the power to stay in the federal government; wich one is better? Well if you give money to the states, they can do whatever they want and what if they stopped giving my brother money? That wouldn't be very good. Last thing I want to say is that I agree with Obama when he kept stating that Romney wasn't saying HOW, it was like he was making empty promises. Overall, Obama still has my vote and I hope that's the right decision.

Article Introduction

I read an article called "Mitt's Unfortunate Reference to 'Illegal Aliens' on Univision" on Crooks and Liars about what Mitt Romney said about the Latino crowd. He said that they were important to winning the election, however he kind of contradicted himself. This article written by karoli quoted him,"for those that are here, that are undocumented, that were brought here by their parents, and therefore are illegal aliens...my view is that we should put into place a permanent solution." karoli isn't fond of what he was going to do, if elected, because it's not the children's fault and that they're supposed to be covered by the DREAM act and do not consider themselves as illegal aliens.  At the end of the article, karoli states that Romney doesn't use the word "citizen" but he uses "permanent resident". They don't think that it's fair because Romney gives out the impression that he does not care for the Latino population.
I think it's a very interesting little article to read because it gives an opinion and I personally like reading opinion based articles. It also informed me on what he said because I was obviously not well informed. So if you're like me, you should definitely read the article.
